The Town of Lewisboro was ranked the nation's "safest city' by Safewise. Other top-ranked communities in Westchester County were: Briarcliff Manor in 9th place, Croton-on-Hudson in 16th place, the Town of Harrison in 53rd, the City of Rye in 55th, the Town of North Castle in 63rd, the Town of New Castle in 70th, the Village of Pleasantville in 86th and the Village of Tuckahoe in 94th place.

In Orange County, the Town of Highlands ranked 77th.

In Putnam County, the Town of Carmel ranked 92nd and the Town of Kent ranked 97th.

On average, 3.86 violent crimes and 24.50 property crimes were reported per 1,000 people in the US during 2016. Although the rate of violent crime increased 3.4% from 2015 to 2016, violent crime rates have decreased substantially over the last two decades. For example, in 1997 approximately six violent crimes were reported for every 1,000 people. The reports of property crime have also drastically declined, with 11.5 million reported in 1997 and 7.9 million reported in 2016, according to the Safewise report.

Some areas of the country experienced much less criminal activity than the national average. Analyzing the FBI report, we discovered the crime rate among northeastern states was approximately 30 percent less than the national average. Nearly half of the cities on the Top 100 list are in Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York or Massachusetts.

While no community is immune to crime, the cities on the list experienced exceptionally low crime rates. On average, the 100 Safest Cities in America reported a mere eight property crimes for every 1,000 people—that’s 67 percent less than the national property crime rate. Violent crimes were even less common, with over half the cities citing zero crimes of this type.
